Celestial Bodies...The Moon (Galileo) Manicure

The Moon Manicure is an elegant alternative to the traditional French manicure, first appearing back in the 1920s and was popular among women until the late 1940s.  Almost 100 years later and it is undergoing something of a renaissance, being dubbed "The Spring 2011 nail trend", and has been spotted on many catwalks at S/S 2011 shows and sported by many 'on-trend' celebrities on the red carpet, notably Dita Von Teese

But how does Galileo figure into the art of manicures?  Well, being one of the great astronomers of the Early Modern Era, he was the first to raise his self-made telescope up to view the moon and made careful illustrations of the moon's surface and documented its movements.  So, I think it is fitting to pay tribute to Galileo, a man who's life work furthered our understanding of the mysterious celestial body that orbits our Earth and gives us inspiration for nail art.

The moon-mani is a very simple and easily reproducible style, and works with any colour, so I thought I would give it a go.  With all the sunshine recently, I thought traditional colours, such as black and white, were a tad boring so opted for some bright block colours, pink (Graphic by Mavala) and coral (Drury Lane by Nails Inc.).

Although the colours are bright, I like the subtle contrast between the two and the design more closely resembles a sunset than the moon rising!

As far as method goes, simply paint the base of the nail plate, i.e. the bit where the nail and cuticle meet, with a colour of your choice.  When thoroughly dry place a small circular sticker over the base of the nail (a hole punch reinforcer is good but anything semi-circular is fine), and paint your top colour over the rest of the nail.  Once the top colour is dry, peel the sticker off and apply a good, clear top coat.  Et VoilĂ !

Always remember to coat the entire nail plate with two coats of nail strengthener before applying the first colour.  And to finish, always apply cuticle oil.  Not applying cuticle oil is like not conditioning you hair O_o

I'm sure Galileo would appreciate this!  ^_^

As long as it doesn't rain...

A fantastic alternative to just throwing your clothes in landfill but probably more useful in L.A. than in Cambridge.
